2025 Spring Workshop: May 3, 2025
The theme of this year's workshop is: When Birds Do Sing, In Springtime, In Springtime: Music of the English Madrigal School. We'll be led in four-plus hours of music-making by Ann Arbor's Corinne Schat, a local recorder professional and teacher.
Corinne is a former director of the Ann Arbor Recorder Society and has conducted recorder society workshops in Ann Arbor, Toledo, and Detroit. As a performer, she has given concerts with a variety of early music ensembles throughout the United States and Europe. She studied recorder at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with Michael Lynn and for 5 years as a student in the “Block” system at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Walter van Hauwe where she received the “Diploma MuziekvakOnderwijs.”
Workshop Description: An intense flowering of the musical madrigal came to fruition during the time of The English Madrigal School from 1588 to 1627. Our workshop features works by John Farmer, John Wilbye, Orlando Gibbons, John Bennet, William Byrd and Thomas Morley. This music is bursting with joy, humor, and passion! In order to bring these compositions to life, we will work on both general ensemble skills: how to start, how to end, score analysis, effective rehearsal strategies, and especially on skills that meet the unique challenges of the recorder: articulation, tuning, tone, and playing in sync with each other.
